Shanghai Yu-Life Toastmasters Club Meetings #482
meeting #482 @
The sky is gloomy today, while our meeting starts with genuine sunshine from Helen - she decides to be a club member. Welcome Helen.
Our SAA @Jasmine leads her flagship game - guess which is false. This lovely game not only brings laughter to the bright meeting room, but also switches on our Sunday morning's brain for another awesome Yu-Life meeting.
After our acting president @Peter announces the meeting opening. TMD@Danny debuts her first time host show on the stage. She fluently introduces the meeting agenda with confident voice and smile.
Today we have a meeting marathon - 7 prepared speeches and 7 individual evaluators. Danny shows that she is well-prepared for each member on the stage. Her beautiful words during the stage transition works like a small river that makes the meeting going on according to her pace.
Speaker 1: Carol - It's been a while since I last heard Carol's speech. This time I clearly feel that she has big improvement. Her hair-cutting story is well developed with start - conflict - end. Her message about communication from the story may not be very clear, but her delivery is confident: I see a lot of facial expression, vocal variety and stage movement. I think she pays attention on these skills and learns how to do it. Great stories teller.
Speaker 2: Cicy - This is Cicy's first speech as a club member, her Ice Breaker. She introduces herself as a planner, life planner, life-long learner, a mother and a daughter. I can hear the structure of her speech is moving herself forward to a broad area. The more she talks about herself, the nearer she becomes engaged with the audience. Her final words are powerful in connecting with all of us to move together. I like her voice - it is very clear and with various paces for different situation. Normally only a well-trained speaker can do that, but Cicy demonstrates it amazingly well in her first club speech. Great Talent. I notice that she breaks a few times during the speech. It seems that she is trying to remember the words. This is normal. She just needs to speak more.
Speaker 3: Jasmine - This is Jasmine's 3 speeches in a row for 3 weeks. What a diligent person she is. It seems for me that she can naturally speak on the stage for a long time. This time her speech is profession related. While she brings out her thought using data, she passionately call the audience together for a brighter China. She gracefully uses her fluent English, dramatic gestures and emotion to deliver her idea to the mass. Well-done.
Speaker 4: Selina - Long time no see, Selina. I still recall her last speech was so touching that we almost cried with her during the speech. This time she changes her style and shows us her professional speech about BI. I like her presentation slide - they are full of data. Her opening is particularly good. She uses AI as a question to bring out BI. I learned this. I am expecting more speeches from Selina.
Speaker 5: Calin - we all konw that Calin will compete in division speech contest next week. This is her self training speech. I notice that she becomes more naturally when she talks on the stage. Her story is so real as it reflects some parts of our life, whether it is at work or in the club. She fluently demonstrates how a will in one's mind can make a big difference in real life. Come on, Calin.
Speaker 6: Maggie - This is Maggie's Level 3 speech. She has the ability to make a speech vivid and with meaning. Her introduction of a Hollywood movie star shows that she can collect material, organize them, and find the logic and essence for the audience. She has natural stage control with gestures and movement. What I like most is her interaction with the audience is mixed into her speech smoothly. This shows her care about the audience. Good job.
Speaker 7: Lisa - This a long speech for over 18 minutes. Lisa has prepared a few useful slides to support her speech. This is a good strategy when you deliver a long speech. The visual aid will help you navigate the speech. Her topic is also very technical but still can attract the audience because she is talking about the automobile which we are all familiar in some sense. Her speech style fits the material very well - with clear voice and point. When saying the important changes, she raises her voice. This keeps the audience's attention in her points. A special demon for the high level speakers.
We have 7 individual evaluators for each speaker. They all done a fantastic job.
IE 1 and 7: Joker - we all know that Joker has the ability to point out the shining point using his natural gestures and funny facial expression. I like that he can always set a goal for the speakers to achieve in their next speech.
IE 2: Lao Xie - He likes to encourage the speaker for her good point using some concrete examples. For example, he repeats what Cicy has done dramatically during her speech - a dialog. This is a piratical way for evaluation and can help the speaker remember what to do next time.
IE 3: Maggie - She really gives the speaker good encouragement by mentioning her performance and improvement. She can quickly summarize the evaluation point using numbers which make the evaluation good to remember.
IE 4: Vikki - I like Vikki's easy-going style on the stage. She interacts with the audience as she smiles. This is a good way to bring the evaluation really to all the audience. Vikki makes a lot of improvement in stage movement during her evaluation. I would like to hear her next speech as well.
IE 5: Jasmine - Jasmine and Maggie are interesting combination. They evaluate each other's speech. From her tone in the evaluation, I could see that Jasmine likes Maggie's speech, not only the content, but also the delivery. As a new member Jasmine quickly involves in many roles, and she has done that well. I see that in the evaluation she can mimic Maggie's speech in her own version. I clearly see that when she wants to praise she jumps a little. This is a very personalized evaluation. We all need this.
IE 6: Peter - Peter is another division speech contestant and he has experience in district contest. It is very good that he can give Calin his advice. And for sure, Peter does give very concrete advice in both content and performance. He also demonstrates that how Calin could improve the engagement in her opening by rearranging her content a little. I think this is a good try. Another gem in Peter's speech is that he can always perform some black humor with expressionless face. Marvelous talent.
