SAA role description
SAA - Sergeant At Arms - is very critical role for a club. It is one of the club officers with official responsibilities and skills learned as listed in SAA overview.
SAA responsibilities
before the meeting
- prepare the meeting venue: club banner, white board, seats
- greet meeting attendees: sign-in, distribute agenda
- secure meeting facility: check audio/video, distribute timer record sheet/Ah-Counter record sheet/TTE record sheet/IE record sheet/GE record sheet
during the meeting
- be the first one on the stage to welcome all with standard script
- facilitate a warm-up session
- invite the club president to the stage for meeting opening
- other activities depends on the meeting, for example, during contest be a door keeper
after the meeting
- clean the meeting venue: club banner, white board, seats
- collect the meeting material: the record sheets
SAA standard script
The SAA will call the meeting to order and before introducing the President or the Chairman, and sometimes have a joke or a motivational game to get the meeting moving in the right direction.
Therefore the SAA should always be well dressed. As the first person seen by guests and members the SAA has the responsibility of appearing to “care” about the role and what it entails. It is important that the guests and all attendees get a good first impression.
The standard script is the content of what SAA will say, for example, meeting opening of SAA.
warm-up game
Your gestures, my words
In this game, SAA will prepare some words, e.g. 四字成语, and be the first one on the stage to describe the words using only his gestures. The audience will guess the words based on SAA’s gestures.
The first one who gets the correct answer will go on the stage to act the next words from SAA. So the games go on.
If one person has the correct answer for the second time, he can nominate another person to act instead.
Here is a list of words: 大可不必、一手遮天、狡兔三窟、指东打西、顺水推舟、喜上眉梢、一字千金
When the words are all said or the time is up, the game ends.

Somebody says
In this game, SAA will name a real somebody, e.g. a meeting attendee, Lao Xie.
When SAA says: "Lao Xie says, 'right hand up'", then all the people should put their right hands up.
When SAA says: "right hand down" without Lao Xie, then nobody should put their right hand down.
SAA could try to talk fast with or without "Lao Xie says" as the opening. Persons who do not follow should be out of this game. The final person who follows SAA is the winner, and the game ends.
This game is easy, and fun. Please make sure the sentences are not offensive.

Wind, rain, storm
In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
Then SAA shows how to make the wind: just put two hands together and make sound by scratching two hands. This is the sound of wind.
SAA asks the audience to practice one or two times of making wind.
Then SAA shows how to make rain: just clap your hands. This is the sound of rain.
SAA asks the audience to practice one or two times of making rain.
Then SAA shows how to make storm: clap your hands, and clap your feet. This is the sound of storm.
SAA asks the audience to practice one or two times of making storm.
Finally, SAA can ask the audience to make switches between wind, rain and storm. People will be wormed up and become relaxed by this little easy game.
This is game is easy and effective. It is suitable for a large audience.

Chinese 9x9 Multiply table
In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
Then SAA asks all audience to make a circle together.
SAA leads the circle to clap hands in a stable rhythms, and the starts to say two digits from 1 to 9 each, for example, 3 and 7
The person to the left of the SAA should speak out the result of the multiplication, for example, 21 (= 3 times 7). Then he says another two digits to make the game continue.
People keep clapping during the game.
The ones who make a mistake about the result will leave the game.
SAA can announce the end of the game in a proper time.
This is game is easy and effective to make the audience together. It is suitable for a medium sized audience.

1-Yuan-and-5-Jiao
In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
Then SAA asks all audience to make a circle together.
SAA announces that each lady is 1 Yuan, and each gentleman is 5 Jiao. SAA will say a number, for example, 1 Yuan and 5 Jiao. The audience should hug together to form 1 Yuan and 5 Jiao: either 1 lady plus 1 gentleman, or 3 gentlemen.
Those who cannot get a partner will be out of the game.
SAA continues by saying different numbers.
The ones who make the number will stay in the game.
SAA can announce the end of the game in a proper time.
This is game is easy and effective to make the audience together. It is suitable for a medium sized audience.

word-following-up
In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
The audience can stay in their seats.
SAA announces that she will speak a word, for example, "egg, and (the ending) G". The the next audience will speak a new word that starts with "G", for example, "good, and (the ending) 'D'". The next next audience will speak another new word following the rule, for example, "door, and (the ending) 'R'", and so on and so forth.
Those who cannot get a new word will be out of the game.
SAA could increase the level of difficulty by limiting the categories of new word to, say, color, number, food, animal, etc.
SAA can announce the end of the game in a proper time.
This is game is hard and educational to make the audience thinking in English. It is suitable for a medium and large sized audience.

In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
The audience stand up and make a circle.
SAA announces that a person starts a number, for example 1. The person to the left should say the next number, for example 2, and this continues. However, when the number contains 3 or is a multiplex of 3, the person should claps instead of say the number. For example, the third person in the above example should clap, and the fourth person should say 4.
Those who cannot make the correct action will be out of the game.
SAA can announce the end of the game in a proper time.
This is game is easy and fun when speaking in English. It is suitable for a medium and large sized audience.

Hi-Ha
In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
The audience stand up and make a circle.
SAA announces that this game will help the audience practice using their sound. He starts by saying: open your mouth big and say Ah as long as possible. In the meantime, you feel the trembling in your stomach. Please do this for 2 or 3 times.
The second practice is to move your bung in the mouth as much as possible. This helps practice the movement of your important muscles in the mouth.
The third action is to say loudly the short voice: "i". In the meantime, you feel the movement in your stomach.
The last action is to say a combined voice: "Hi-Ha" together.
This game is good for your voice control, and help you improve your vocal variety. Hope you enjoy it.

Teacher's-Order
In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
The audience stand up and make a circle.
SAA announces that this game will help the audience remember what the teachers say to them. If she says something that with the words "teacher says", the audience should follow. Otherwise, if she says something without "teacher says", the audience should not have any action.
The audience who fails to follow the command from SAA will leave the game. The game is good for improving listening skills.

Head-Shoulder-Knee-Toe-?
In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
The audience stand up and make two lines face to face.
SAA will put an orange on the ground between each pair of people. The game begins. SAA will lead the audience doing an exercise: hands to head, hands to shoulders, hands to knees, hands to toes, and hands to head again. The SAA will surprisingly add "hands to oranges" after "hands to toes" sometimes. When the audience hear oranges, they can grab the only orange in front them.
The audience who gets the orange can have it and the game ends. The game gives people a chance to exercises and also improve their listening skills.
This is game is easy and fun. It is suitable for a small and medium sized audience while we should be careful about safety.

Bird and Bear
In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
The audience stand up and make pairs with lines face to face.
SAA will nominate one line of the pair as bird, and the other line of the pair as bear. The pairs should pull out their hands and their four hands should be ordered one after another like this: hand-of-1|hand-of-2|hand-of-1|hand-of-2.
Then SAA announces the rule: when people hear the word bird, the bird will clap their hands and try to hit the bear, and bear should try to move their hands up and down to escape. When people hear the word bear, the bear will clap, and the bear should escape.
The SAA could create a small story about bird and bear so that the game becomes funny. The SAA can control how long the game could last by adjust the length of the story.
This is game is easy and fun. It is suitable for a small and medium sized audience while we should be careful about safety.

Build a Tree or something
In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
The audience stand up and make a few groups according to SAA's order. SAA will nominate one leader of each group.
Then SAA announces the rule: when she says a word, like tree, each group leader will make a part of the tree and each group member will make some other parts of the tree or something related to a tree, for example, a bird, a bear, etc.
The SAA will check each group for the tree and ask questions or give comments. The group who make innovative trees get praised.
This is game is easy and fun. It is suitable for a medium to large sized audience while we should be careful about safety.

True or False
In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
SAA announces the rule: she will ask a meeting attendee to say three things about himself: 2 true and 1 false; then the SAA will ask another person to judge which one is the false one.
If the answer is correct, then the first attendee moves on by asking another attend the same thing. If the answer is not correct, then the second attendee will say three things about himself: 2 true and 1 false; and then pick another person to guess. So the game continues.
This is game is easy and fun. It is suitable for a small to middle sized audience.

4-letter word
In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
SAA announces the rule: she will give a 4-letter English word. The audience can generate new words either (1) change 1 letter in the word, or (2) change the order of the original letters in ther word. People can look up the word in the dictionary.
For example, if the given word is "road", an answer using rule (1) could be "load", and an answer using rule (2) could be "dora". The person who spells the last word in the game time is the winner.
This is game is hard, and maybe less amusing. However, it is suitable for English lovers and is very challenging.

happy birthday to you
In this game, SAA calls everybody's attention.
SAA announces the rule: people should make 2 groups randomly or by the order of the SAA. Each group should find a person whose birthday in the current month or near current month. Then the birthday person starts to sing the birthday song, but she will only sing the first word - happy. The next person to the left will sing the second word - birthday, and then the next person, and so on. If anyone makes a mistake in the song, he should start over from the first word.
The group who finish the complete song first without a mistake will be the winner, and the game stops here.
This is game is very engaging in that it celebrates a person's birthday in a special way. This is suitable for a middle sized meeting.
